A device used to accurately read fractions of a division on a main scale, also known as a vernier scale. It was invented in 1631 by the French vernier Pierre Vernier (1580-1637), but its theory is said to have already been established by the German Clavius in 1611. To use it, as shown in , first read the largest division on the main scale, 73, to the left of the 0 on the vernier scale. Next, read the value 4 (8th division) on the vernier scale where the main scale division and the vernier scale coincide. In this case, if the minimum reading is 0.05 mm, the final reading is 73 + 0.05 x 8 = 73.4 mm.
