〘Noun〙 In early modern times, a teahouse in a red-light district lent straw hats to customers to hide their faces. In Kyoto's Shimabara district, they were located at the Tanbaguchi entrance, in Edo's Shin-Yoshiwara, outside the Daimon gate, and in Osaka's Shinmachi district, the gatekeeper of the Daimon gate worked as a guardhouse as well, and they were called Amigasa-chaya. In Shin-Yoshiwara, they are said to have existed from around the Genbun era ( 1736-41 ) until the Meiwa era ( 1764-72). *Ukiyo-zoshi, Koshoku Nidai- Otoko (1684), 2 "Two steps to the teahouse at the entrance, one step to the Amigasa- chaya in Doromachi."
