Year of death: 13 January 1398 (1398.1.31) Year of birth: Kenmu 1.4.22 (1334.5.25) The third emperor of the Northern Court during the Nanboku-cho period. His father was Emperor Kogon and his mother was Hideko (Yorokumon'in), the daughter of Minister of the Interior Sanjo Kinhide. His first name was Masuhito, later changed to Okino. His Buddhist name was Katsu Enshin. He ascended to the throne in 1348 (Teiwa 4/Shohei 3). In 1348 (Shohei 6), during his fourth year on the throne, the conflict between Ashikaga brothers Takauji and Tadayoshi intensified, and Takauji made a peace agreement with the Southern Court with the aim of defeating Tadayoshi. As a result, he was deposed by Emperor Go-Murakami of the Southern Court and given the honorary title of Retired Emperor. From the following year, he was moved from place to place, including Owaganao (Nara Prefecture) and Kongoji Temple in Kawachi (Osaka Prefecture), together with the retired emperors Kogon and Komyo and Prince Naohito, before returning to Kyoto in 1362 (Enbun 2/Shohei 12) and retiring to Fushimidono. As the legitimate heir of the Jimyoin line, he fervently hoped for his son, Prince Yoshihito, to ascend to the throne, but this was not to be. However, in terms of culture, he devoted himself to the study of the biwa, which the legitimate heir of the Jimyoin line placed great importance on, and mastered secret songs, which he passed on to his disciples and the Fushiminomiya family, of which Prince Yoshihito was the first. In waka poetry, he maintained the Kyogoku school style used by the Jimyoin line, and formed his own poetry circle through poetry gatherings at Fushimidono Palace and other events.
