Calf cramp
A slang term for tonic spasms of the calf muscles. While localized spasms are generally painless, this type is known for being extremely painful. It can occur during exercise such as swimming or mountain climbing, or due to overwork of the calf muscles or exposure to cold. It is also an occupational hazard for dancers. Treatment is primarily rest, with massage, compresses, and electrical therapy.

ふくらはぎの腓腹(ひふく)筋の強直性痙攣(けいれん)の俗称。一般に局所的痙攣は無痛なものが多いが,これは激痛を伴うので有名。水泳,登山などの運動中,腓腹筋の過労や寒冷によって起こる。舞踊家の職業病でもある。治療は安静を第一とし,マッサージ,湿布,電気療法など。
