Garo tribe - Garo (English spelling)

Japanese: ガロ族 - ガロぞく（英語表記）Garo

A tribe in western Assam, in what is now Meghalaya, India, who speak a language belonging to the Bodo group of the Tibeto-Burman language family. They number about 300,000. They are thought to have migrated from Tibet and Bhutan. They cultivate rice and cotton using slash-and-burn cultivation. They hold land in common, build villages on riverbanks, and live in pile dwellings. The Garos are divided into several sub-tribes, and form phratries, which are matrilineal exogamous clans. They practice cross-cousin marriage, with the mother marrying the daughter first. They once practiced headhunting, and in the 18th century were the terror of the Assam plains.

インドの現在のメガラヤ州，西アッサムのチベット･ビルマ語派のボド語群に属する言語を話す種族。人口約30万を数える。チベット，ブータンより移動して来たらしい。イネおよびワタを焼畑移動耕作する。土地は共有で，川岸に村をつくり杭上住居に住む。ガロ族はいくつかの支族に分かれ，母系外婚氏族で胞族(フラトリー)をなす。母処婚で女子より求婚し，交叉いとこ婚が行われる。かつては首狩りを盛んに行い，18世紀にはアッサム平野の恐怖の的であった。
