Born: November 11, 1729 in Paris
Died: August 31, 1811. French navigator and soldier. In 1756, he served as an aide-de-camp to the Marquis de Montcalm in New France (Canada) and fought against the British. He then joined the navy, and in 1764 established a colony in the Falkland Islands on his own for France. In 1766, he was ordered to circumnavigate the world, and set sail in December. He passed through the Strait of Magellan, entered the South Pacific, and visited Tahiti, Samoa, the New Hebrides, and other islands, before returning to the United States in March 1769. His account of the voyage was published as Voyage autour du monde (1771). He later participated in the American War of Independence, and in 1790 was appointed commander of the fleet at Brest. He became a senator and a count during the Napoleonic era. The island of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands, the strait of the same name in the New Hebrides, and the plant Bougainvillea are named after him.
