...The Savoy dynasty, which had existed since the Kingdom of Sardinia, came to an end, and Italy was reborn as a republic. In the Constituent Assembly elections held at the same time as the national referendum, the Christian Democrats (35.2% of the vote), the Socialist Party (20.7%), and the Communist Party (19%) overwhelmingly outnumbered the other smaller parties, and the work of drafting the constitution was centered around these three parties. After a year and a half of deliberation, the Constitution of the Italian Republic was enacted in December 1947 and came into effect in January 1948.
