Bougainville [island] - Bougainville

Japanese: ブーゲンビル[島] - ブーゲンビル
Bougainville [island] - Bougainville
An island in the northern Solomon Islands. It belongs to Papua New Guinea. It is mountainous and has active volcanoes such as Bagana and Balbi (2,685m). It produces copper, gold, silver, coconuts, bananas, and cacao. It was named after the Frenchman Bougainville, who arrived in 1768. It became a German territory in 1884 and an Australian trust territory in 1914. Its capital is Arawa. It was a fierce battleground between the United States and Japan during the Pacific War. It covers an area of 9,300 km2 . It has a population of 249,358 (2011), including Buga Island to the north. It belongs to the Solomon Islands both culturally and geographically. Around the time of Papua New Guinea's independence in 1975, the islanders declared independence, but this was not recognized due to the interests of the world's leading copper mine. However, as mining development progressed, armed conflict by the residents intensified again in 1988. In 1990, the Bougainville Revolutionary Army declared independence, and clashes with government forces have continued since then.
