Japanese music - Hogaku
Hogaku is performed using all Japanese instruments such as the koto, shamisen, shakuhachi, wadaiko, and flute. The basic structure of a piece is based on the idea of "Jo (introduction), Ha (development), and Kyu (conclusion)" (everything has a jo, ha, and kyu, expressing the morning, noon, and night of a day, the four seasons, and the life of a person). Most of the pieces are monotonous and do not have a clear melody like Western music. Therefore, a very high level of technique and expressiveness is required because everything must be expressed by playing just one note. Hogaku is a term that refers to Japanese music such as the koto, shamisen, and shakuhachi, and is generally not considered to include folk music such as gagaku, noh, and folk songs and local performing arts. In most cases, Hogaku exists in close relation to literature, dance, and theater, rather than existing alone as music. Examples include storytellers (be), who combined literature and music, and gagaku, joruri, nagauta, and nohgaku, which were combined with dance and theater. However, by calling it "modern Japanese music," we can include all of the above music. In the Japanese Culture Iroha Dictionary, we will provide a broad explanation of "modern Japanese music."
