Born in the 5th year of Jōji (Shōhei 21). He became a monk following Zekkai Nakatsu of the Rinzai sect. He trained in Ming (China) for 10 years, and after returning to Japan, he inherited the Zekkai teachings. In the 21st year of the Oei era, he was appointed head priest of the Rokuon-in pagoda, and later also served as the abbot of Tenryū-ji Temple. He fell out with the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimochi, and retired to Gyūkō-an in Tosa (Kochi Prefecture). He died on February 18th, 32nd year of the Oei era. He was 60 years old.
