Although it has the name "Mysidae," it is not a member of the Mysidae family, but a member of the Crustacean family. It reaches a body length of 3 cm. It is pale pink and turns white when dead. It resembles the Sakura shrimp, but can be distinguished by the presence of a hepatic spine on the cephalothorax, a single spine at the base of the rostrum, pincers on the first thoracic leg, and the lack of a light-emitting organ on the body. The spawning season is from early May to early October, and for example, a female with a body length of 2.5 to 3 cm can lay about 7,000 eggs. Those that hatch in September and October survive the year and spawn in May to July of the following year.

アミの名はあるが，アミの仲間ではなく甲殻綱サクラエビ科に属するエビ。体長3cmに達する。淡い桃色で，死ぬと白色になる。サクラエビに似ているが，頭胸甲に肝上棘（かんじようきよく）があること，額角の基部に1本のとげがあること，第1胸脚がはさみをもつこと，体に発光器がないことで区別される。産卵期は5月上旬から10月上旬で，例えば体長2.5～3cmの雌で約7000粒を放卵する。9～10月に孵化（ふか）したものは越年し，翌年の5～7月に産卵する。
