Born: December 29, 1796 in Hamburg Died January 24, 1877. Berlin. German physicist and historian of science. Born into a wealthy family, his father's generation fell into poverty. At the age of 15, he became an apprentice to a pharmacist. He went to Berlin to study science and began experimental research (1820). His achievements, including the invention and improvement of the galvanometer, were recognized, and he was employed in the meteorological observation section of the Berlin Academy of Sciences (23). He was an extracurricular professor at the University of Berlin (34). He was a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences (39). He excelled in experimental research into electric current phenomena, and is known for his inventions such as the galvanometer and the slide resistor, but what made him particularly famous was his great influence on the scientific community as editor of the Annalen der Physik und Chemie (Annals of Physics and Chemistry) for half a century, starting in 1824. His main work is Biographisch-Literarische Handwörterbuch zur Geschichte der exakten Wissenschaften (63).
