Akiu

Japanese: 秋保 - あきう
Akiu

This town was located in Natori District, central Miyagi Prefecture. It is currently part of Taihaku Ward, Sendai City. It was incorporated as a town in 1967, and was incorporated into Sendai City in 1988. To the west are the Ou Mountains, with Mt. Daito, Mt. Omoshiro, and Mt. Kamuro, and it has long been connected to Yamagata Prefecture by Futakuchi Pass. The Natori River, which originates at Futakuchi Pass and flows through the center of Akiu, has famous spots such as Futakuchi Gorge and Rairaikyo Gorge. National Route 457 runs through the area. The Akiu clan, who ruled this area from the Kamakura period, became vassals of the Date clan at the end of the Sengoku period. During the Edo period, it was a mountain village whose main industry was charcoal burning. It has long been famous as a hot spring resort, with the hot springs of Akiu Onsenkyo and Futakuchi Onsen. The area is home to the nationally designated scenic spots of Akiu Otaki (Fudotaki), Banjiiwa, and Anetaki, a natural monument. The "Akiu Rice Planting Dance" was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1976, and was registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 2009.
