A marsupial mammal of the Boulamysidae family. It resembles rodents such as dormice, especially the European dormouse, in both appearance and habits. It has a round body and short limbs. Unlike the dormouse, its tail is exposed except for the base, and can be wrapped around something. In autumn, it accumulates fat in its body for hibernation, and becomes significantly enlarged; at the same time, fat is also accumulated in its tail, which becomes noticeably thicker. It has large ears and eyes. Its body color is yellowish brown, with black around the eyes. Its well-developed brood pouch has four nipples. It is 8.5-10 cm long, 9-11 cm long, and weighs 15-25 g.

有袋目ブーラミス科の哺乳類。姿，習性ともに齧歯（げつし）類のヤマネ，とくにヨーロッパヤマネに似ている。体は丸く，四肢が短い。尾は，ヤマネのそれと異なり基部を除いて裸出し，ものに巻きつけることができる。秋に，冬眠のための脂肪を体に蓄積して著しく肥大するが，この際に尾にも脂肪を蓄えるため，目だって太くなる。耳と目は大きい。体色は黄褐色，目の周囲が黒色。よく発達した育児囊には4個の乳頭がある。体長8.5～10cm，尾長9～11cm，体重15～25g。
