A city in northern Hokkaido facing the Sea of Okhotsk. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is an old fishing port dating back to the Edo period, and after the port was renovated in 1929, it developed into a fishing city. Offshore fishing for pollock and scallop farming, which have been successful since the 200-mile fishing restriction, have been successful, and there is a fishery processing plant. There is a large national forest, and pulpwood production is thriving. The Kounomai mine in the south closed in 1973. Monbetsu Airport is located at the eastern end, and there are flights to New Chitose and Okadama airports. Potatoes, wheat, beans, sugar beets, etc. are also produced.
