Higashimokoto [village] - Higashimokoto

Japanese: 東藻琴[村] - ひがしもこと

A village in Abashiri County, Abashiri Subprefecture, located south of Abashiri City in eastern Hokkaido. Population 2,939 (1995). Occupying gentle slopes on the northern foot of Mt. Mokoto, the Mokoto River flows north through the center. Settlers from various places started development in 1906, and the area developed rapidly during the Taisho period. Agriculture was centered on field crops such as flax, peppermint, potatoes, and beans, but this has almost disappeared due to successive cold damages and production adjustments. Currently, field agriculture, mainly sugar beets and potatoes, is the focus, and dairy and beef cattle breeding and pig farming are also thriving.

北海道東部，網走市の南にある網走支庁網走郡の村。人口2939(1995)。藻琴山北麓の緩傾斜地を占め，中央を藻琴川が北流する。1906年各地からの入植者によって開拓が始まり，大正期に急速に開けた。亜麻，ハッカ，ジャガイモ，豆類の畑作物を中心とする農業が営まれたが，相次ぐ冷害と生産調整でほとんど姿を消した。現在はテンサイ，ジャガイモなどを主とする畑作農業を中心に，乳牛･肉牛の飼育，養豚なども盛んである。
