In Greek mythology, Damastes or Polyphemon was a nickname for a highwayman who lived on the road from Megara to Athens. He had two beds, one large and one small, and when he captured a traveler, he would put the larger on the smaller bed and the smaller on the larger one, and then cut or stretch his legs to fit the size of the bed, killing him. He was later defeated by Theseus. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
