A province in the northeastern part of North Korea's northwest region. It borders China across the Yalu River to the north and was separated from North Pyongan Province in 1949. Its area is approximately 15,400 square kilometers. Its administrative district consists of three cities (Ganggye, Manpo, and Heecheon) and 15 counties. It is located in Ganggye. The terrain is dominated by high mountains, with the average altitude of the province being 700 meters. To the east, the Nanrim Mountains run from the north to the south, and their branches leave remnants of hills in the west. Rivers generally flow from the south to the north and empty into the Yalu River. The climate is cold, with only two months of the year with an average temperature above 20°C, including Jungkang, which recorded the lowest temperature on the Korean peninsula (-43.6°C in 1933). Before liberation in 1945, the main industries were logging and ore mining. Nowadays, machinery, mining, and forestry are carried out. North Korea's largest machine tool factory, Heecheon, was established in 1951 during the Korean War, and produced its first lathe in 1954. It produces machine tools such as milling machines and radial drill presses. Hydroelectric resources are also abundant, with the Dokrokang, Kanggye Youth, and Unbong hydroelectric power plants. Mining is carried out by the lead and zinc mines in Hapung, the graphite mines in Dongfang, and the copper mines in Hwapyeong. Forestry is carried out by log production and lumber processing, with logs accounting for one-quarter of North Korea's production. The centers are Nanrim and Ryongrim. In Weiwon, Ganggye, Heecheon, Maecheon, and Seonggan, there are farms for raising pigs, ducks, chickens, etc. Agriculture is centered on cold-resistant corn, beans, and potatoes. In addition, Ganggye, Manpo, Maecheon, and Heecheon, there are local industrial enterprises producing stationery, daily necessities, brewing, etc. [Fish pond] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
