Sled boat - Sled boat

Japanese:
Sled boat - Sled boat
A hollowed-out boat seen on the Izumo and Oki coasts of Shimane Prefecture. In ancient times it was widely used for fishing and transport, but in modern times it is used exclusively for trawl fishing in Lake Nakaumi in Izumo, and even that has now almost disappeared. It is about 6m long and 1m wide, and made of fir. In the past it was carved from a single log, but gradually it changed to being made of two or three pieces. It is distinctive in that the bow is extremely curved, purposely made to make it easier to roll. The rowing tool is a oar. [Ishizuka Takatoshi]
