Abbreviation for Trades Union Congress. Almost all major trade unions in the UK are members, bringing together 90% of organized workers. Founded in 1868, it is the world's oldest national centre. It has expanded significantly since the 1890s, and made great strides after World War I. After World War II, it became the centre of the World Labour Confederation, but withdrew from it in support of the Marshall Plan and formed the International Federation of Free Trade Unions. It is the support base for the Labour Party. There are 74 unions and approximately 6.7 million members (1998). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
