A mammal of the family Phocidae (pinnipeds) (illustration). This polygamous seal is found in three main habitats: the waters around Canada, such as the Gulf of St. Lawrence; the waters around islands in northern Britain, such as Shetland and Orkney; and the coastal waters from Norway to Murmansk. They are active migratory creatures, sometimes crossing the Atlantic Ocean. They are a fairly large seal, with males reaching a body length of 2.3 m and a weight of 300 kg. Females are slightly smaller, reaching a body length of 2 m and a weight of 200 kg. Males are easily distinguished from females by their long snouts.
