A mammal of the family Phocidae (pinnipeds) (illustration). This polygamous seal is found in three main habitats: the waters around Canada, such as the Gulf of St. Lawrence; the waters around islands in northern Britain, such as Shetland and Orkney; and the coastal waters from Norway to Murmansk. They are active migratory creatures, sometimes crossing the Atlantic Ocean. They are a fairly large seal, with males reaching a body length of 2.3 m and a weight of 300 kg. Females are slightly smaller, reaching a body length of 2 m and a weight of 200 kg. Males are easily distinguished from females by their long snouts. 鰭脚(ききやく)目アザラシ科の哺乳類(イラスト)。一夫多妻型のアザラシ。主要な分布域には,セントローレンス湾などのカナダ周辺海域,シェトランドやオークニーなどのイギリス北部の島々の海域,ノルウェーからムルマンスクに至る沿岸海域の三つがある。移動は活発で,大西洋を横断することもある。やや大型のアザラシで,雄は体長2.3m,体重300kgに達する。雌はやや小型で,体長2m,体重200kgである。雄は鼻部が長いので雌と容易に区別される。
