Years of birth: unknown. A military commander in the mid-Heian period. Son of Minamoto no Mitsunaka, he was the brother of Yorimitsu (the ancestor of the Settsu Genji) and Yorinobu (the ancestor of the Kawachi Genji). Ancestor of the Yamato Genji, a branch of the Seiwa Genji. He was involved in searching for thieves and was known as a "brave man" and "one of the great warriors." He served as the governor of several provinces, but was the governor of Yamato Province three times, which led to him establishing his influence in Yamato Province (Nara Prefecture). During his tenure in Yamato Province, he frequently caused disputes over land with the Fujiwara clan's clan temples, Kofuku-ji Temple, Kasuga Shrine, and Todai-ji Temple (all in Nara City). In particular, during his third term as Yamato no Kami, his son Yorifusa fought a battle with a monk from Kofuku-ji Temple, resulting in many deaths, and he was sued for this, which resulted in Yorichika being exiled to Tosa Province (Kochi Prefecture). He was known for his violent behavior, and was described by Fujiwara no Michinaga as "a master of murder." <References> Oboroya Hisashi, "The Story of Minamoto no Yorichika, the Lord of Yamato" (Ancient Studies 17-2) (Oboriya Hisashi) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
