This refers to the coastal sand dune area on the west coast of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, stretching from north to south for about 47 kilometers and with a maximum width of about 2.8 kilometers. The maximum height of the sand dunes is 47 meters. From the north, it is located in the cities of Ichikikushikino, Hioki, and Minamisatsuma. The widest part is the area that stretches from Fukiage-cho in Hioki City to Kaseda in Minamisatsuma City, and is dotted with small lakes such as Lake Satsuma and Kamehara Pond. There are many black pine forests that act as sand-control forests, and there is little agricultural land use. In 1953 (Showa 28), it was designated as Fukiagehama Prefectural Natural Park. It is as large as the Shibushi Bay Sand Dunes to the east. [Kimihiko Tsukada] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
