Bukavu - Bukabu (English spelling)

It is the capital of South Kivu Province in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in central Africa. It has a population of 201,569 (1994). It is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,600 meters on the southern shore of Lake Kivu, which forms the border with Rwanda. The area was developed during the Belgian colonial period as a tea, coffee, and other plantation region, and is the administrative and economic center of the region. Industries such as food processing, beer brewing, and pharmaceuticals are carried out here, and a teacher training college is also located here. The nearby Kahuzi-Biega National Park (registered as a natural World Heritage Site in 1980 and added to the List of World Heritage in Danger in 1997) is famous for its gorillas.

アフリカ中部、コンゴ民主共和国（旧ザイール）東部にある南キブ州の州都。人口20万1569（1994）。ルワンダとの国境をなすキブ湖の南岸、標高1600メートルの高原に位置する。一帯はベルギー植民地時代に開発された紅茶、コーヒーなどのプランテーション地域で、その行政、経済の中心地である。食品加工、ビール醸造、製薬などの工業が行われ、教員養成大学も置かれている。近郊のカフジ・ビエガ国立公園（1980年世界遺産の自然遺産に登録。1997年危機遺産リスト入り）はゴリラが生息することで有名。
