It is the capital of South Kivu Province in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in central Africa. It has a population of 201,569 (1994). It is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,600 meters on the southern shore of Lake Kivu, which forms the border with Rwanda. The area was developed during the Belgian colonial period as a tea, coffee, and other plantation region, and is the administrative and economic center of the region. Industries such as food processing, beer brewing, and pharmaceuticals are carried out here, and a teacher training college is also located here. The nearby Kahuzi-Biega National Park (registered as a natural World Heritage Site in 1980 and added to the List of World Heritage in Danger in 1997) is famous for its gorillas.
