Karoku Persecution

...The mountain name is Hokoku-san and the temple name is Nembutsu-Zammai-in. In 1227 (Antei 1), during the so-called Karoku Persecution, the monks of Enryaku-ji Temple destroyed the mausoleum of Honen-bo Genku, the founder of the Jodo sect, located in Otani, Higashiyama. Genku's disciples hid their master's remains in Saga and Uzumasa, then cremated him in Aono and buried some of his bones and his ashes. It is said that this was the first mausoleum to be built here....

...A sect of Buddhism founded by Honen. It takes as its fundamental sutras and treatises the three sutras (the three Pure Land sutras) of the Sutra of Immeasurable Life, the Sutra of Contemplation of Immeasurable Life, and the Sutra of Amitabha, as well as the Treatise on Pure Land written by Vasubandhu of India, and aims to be reborn in Amida Buddha's Pure Land paradise by chanting the name of Amida Buddha (reciting Namu Amida Butsu aloud). Zendo of the Tang Dynasty was the founder, and Honen was the sect's founder. In 1175 (Angen 1), Honen became convinced of exclusive nembutsu practice. Although a religious organization had not yet been formed, this was the time when the Jodo sect was founded....
