A semi-cold-tolerant bulbous plant of the lily family (APG classification: Asparagaceae). The leaves are long and fleshy. Numerous tubular flowers grow in spikes or racemes on flower stalks 20-30 cm tall. Native to South Africa, there are more than 90 species of the original species alone. The flowering season is wide, from December to April, and the flowers come in a variety of colors, including red, orange, yellow, green, purple, and brown. L. mutabilis Lodd produces purple flowers that open upwards. L. aloides hort. ex Asch et Graebn. ( L. tricolor Jacq. f.) is dwarf, with flowers that are green, yellow, and orange. A variety called var. aurea is a tall variety that produces large orange-yellow flowers. Propagation is by bulb division, leaf cuttings, and seedlings. In mid- to late September, 3-5 bulbs are planted in a No. 4 pot and grown under a frame or on an indoor windowsill. When the leaves turn yellow in late summer, dry out the pot and store until autumn.

ユリ科（APG分類：キジカクシ科）の半耐寒性秋植え球根草。葉は細長く肉厚。高さ20～30センチメートルの花茎に、筒形の小花を多数、穂状または総状につける。南アフリカ原産で、原種だけで90種以上ある。開花期は12～4月と幅広く、花色も紅、橙(だいだい)、黄、緑、紫、茶色と多彩である。ムタビリス種L. mutabilis Loddは紫色花を上向きに開く。アロイデス種L. aloides hort. ex Asch et Graebn. （L. tricolor Jacq. f.）は矮性(わいせい)で、花は緑、黄、橙色の3色からなる。変種にオーレア種var. aureaがあり、これは高性で、橙黄(とうこう)色の大輪花を開く。繁殖は分球、葉挿し、実生(みしょう)などにより、9月中旬～下旬、4号鉢に3～5球を目安に植え付け、フレームか室内の窓辺で栽培する。晩夏に葉が黄変したら、鉢ごと乾かし、秋まで貯蔵する。
