Watercress - Watercress (English spelling)

Japanese: ウォータークレス - うぉーたーくれす(英語表記)water-cress
Watercress - Watercress (English spelling)

A perennial plant of the Brassicaceae family (APG classification: Brassicaceae). Also called watercress. Japanese name: Dutch Mizugarashi, Mizugarashi. The stem spreads horizontally and rises diagonally to about 50 cm, with fibrous roots coming out from each node. The leaves are odd-pinnate and alternate. Small white cruciform flowers bloom in April and May, with petals about 4 mm long and six stamens, four of which are long. After flowering, it produces slender pods measuring 1 to 1.7 cm. The stems and leaves have a spicy flavor and are used as a garnish for steaks and other Western dishes, or in salads. Native to Europe, it was introduced to Japan around 1870 (Meiji 3), and is now naturalized throughout Japan, growing in wetlands and near water.
