An evergreen tall tree of the family Saltaceae, it grows in salt marshes along the coast, forming mangrove forests (illustration). This species is also known as Mayapushigi (meaning cat mangrove). The roots run horizontally and widely, with numerous woody, bamboo-shoot-like aspiration roots standing vertically. Large aspiration roots can reach 50cm in height and 10cm in diameter. The leaves are opposite, thick and fleshy, ovate or ovate-circular, with rounded tips and slightly rounded or short, pointed bases, without sawtooth edges, and 5-8cm long. The flowers grow singly at the tips of the twigs, 4-5cm in diameter. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
