…Although the name is different, it is the same bill as the Jiaozi of Yizhou. In 1161 (Shaoxing 31), the Southern Song government transferred the Huizi issued by wealthy merchants in Lin'an Prefecture to the government and issued Huizi in the official jurisdiction. This was to make up for the shortage of currency needed for military expenditures in preparation for the Song-Jin War. At first, they were converted into convertible notes following the example of private Huizi, and Huizi Bureaus (exchange offices) were set up in Lin'an Prefecture and Jiankang Prefecture, and the currency was used mainly for military expenditures in Huainan. However, the increase in military expenditures made it difficult to manage, so after the war, the government used its savings to recover the Huizi, and in 1168 (Qiandao 4), they changed them to inconvertible notes, set up a boundary system that set a deadline for the issuance amount, and allowed them to be used in all areas except Sichuan. …
