Born 27 January 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire [Died] January 14, 1898. Guildford, Surrey. British fairy tale writer and mathematician. His real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He studied at Oxford University and served as a mathematics lecturer at his alma mater from 1855 to 1881, and wrote over a dozen books on mathematics. His pseudonymous works, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (72), are both fantastic stories about the fantastic adventures of the young girl Alice, and are beloved around the world as masterpieces of children's literature. His other works include the nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark (76), the novel Sylvie and Bruno (2 volumes, 89, 93), and a collection of poems. These stories and poems go beyond the framework of children's literature and are considered to be the forerunners of modern surrealism and absurdist literature, and can be considered typical examples of nonsense literature. Although Carroll was qualified to become a clergyman, he never took the pulpit due to his shy personality and stammering. He remained single his whole life, although he loved children and enjoyed photography as a hobby. He was a typical Victorian eccentric. Carol |
