In the second year of Tianhan (99 B.C.), he defended Li Ling, who had been captured by the Xiongnu, incurring the wrath of Emperor Wu, who imprisoned him, and the following year executed him. Two years later, he was released under a general amnesty and appointed as the Secretary of the Central Secretariat. He devoted himself to the project of revising history, which he had begun early on at his father's request, and wrote the immortal masterpiece, Records of the Grand Historian.
