A bird of the Anatidae family, with a total length of about 44 cm, with females being slightly smaller. It breeds in the subarctic north of Eurasia, and spends the winter in central and southern Europe and southern Asia. A small number of them breed in Hokkaido in Japan, but most are winter birds that migrate to the area and are often found in freshwater areas such as lakes, ponds, and rivers throughout the country. They feed mainly on animal matter such as shellfish, crustaceans such as small shrimp, aquatic insects, and small fish, but also eat plant buds and leaves. They build their nests near the water's edge in swamps filled with reeds and rushes, and lay 8 to 10 eggs per clutch. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
