Lü Ji

Japanese: 呂紀 - りょき（英語表記）Lü Ji

A painter at the Painting Academy in the Ming Dynasty, China. Also known as "Luoqi." A native of Ningbo (Zhejiang Province), his courtesy name was Tingzhen and his pen name was Legu. He first studied bird-and-flower painting in the Huang style under Bian Jingzhao, and later studied Tang and Song dynasty paintings owned by the great collector Yuan Zhongche, and established his own family. During the Hongzhi era (1488-1505), he first served at the Painting Academy, becoming the Wuying Palace Taizhao. He excelled in gorgeous bird-and-flower paintings in the Goulet-colored style, and is a representative painter of the Ming Dynasty sketch school. Many of his renowned works were imported to Japan, and he had a major influence on bird-and-flower paintings from the Muromachi period onwards. His representative work is "Birds and Flowers in the Four Seasons" (Tokyo National Museum).

中国，明の画院画家。「ろき」ともいう。寧波 (浙江省) の人。字は廷振，号は楽愚。初め辺景昭につき黄氏体の花鳥画を学び，のち大収集家の袁忠徹所蔵の唐宋画を学んで一家をなし，弘治年間 (1488～1505) 初め画院に奉職，武英殿待詔となる。勾勒填彩 (こうろくてんさい) の華麗な花鳥画を得意とし，明代写生派の代表的画家。伝称作品は日本への舶載も多く，室町時代以降の花鳥画に大きな影響を及ぼした。代表作『四季花鳥図』 (東京国立博物館) 。
