A group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, about 600 km east of the southern tip of Argentina, which is a British territory. It consists of two islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, and about 200 small islands. The capital is Stanley. The Argentine name is Malvinas. Most of the islands are low hills caused by glacial erosion, with much barren land and peatland, and well-developed fjords. The climate is cool, and sheep farming is the main industry. Discovered by the British navigator J. Davis in 1592, it was a Spanish territory for a time in the 18th and 19th centuries, but became a British territory in 1832. There has been a dispute between Britain and Argentina over the ownership of the islands, but in April 1982, the Argentine army invaded, and Britain sent troops from its home country, and the Falklands War (Malvinas War) broke out. Both countries lost many lives and war expenses, but Argentina was defeated in June. 12,200 km2 . 2,840 people (2012). → Related articles Argentina | South Orkney [Islands] | South America Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
