In Spanish, the word means "workplace." It specifically refers to textile factories in Spain's New World colonies. Native communities were self-sufficient in textiles, while the upper classes of Spaniards used imported fabrics, but in the gap between the two, namely the lower-class Spaniards, production of mainly crude woolen textiles began in the mid-16th century. The mother country's measures to suppress colonial manufacturing were not particularly effective, and the production capacity of the mother country's manufacturing industry was also low, so it was tolerated, and there were 49 of them in Mexico City in the early 17th century. The number of workers in each ranged from a few dozen to a hundred at most.

スペイン語で，語義は〈仕事場〉。とくにスペインの新大陸植民地の織物工場を指す。原住民共同体は織物を自給し，スペイン人上層はもっぱら輸入布地を用いたが，両者の間隙，すなわち下層のスペイン人を販路として，16世紀半ばにおもに粗製毛織物の生産がはじまった。本国の植民地製造業抑止策はさして有効でなく，また本国製造業の生産能力も低かったため黙許され，その数は17世紀初頭のメキシコ市で49を数えた。それぞれ労働者数は数十から多くて百数十。
