A port city in the southwest of the Jaffna Peninsula, at the northern tip of Sri Lanka. Capital of the Jaffna District. Invaded by the Tamils in 204 BC, it later became the capital of the Tamil Kingdom. In 1617 it was occupied by the Portuguese, in 1658 it became a Dutch colony, and in 1795 it became a British colony. Even today it is the commercial, administrative and cultural centre of the northern Tamil region. The port overlooks the Jaffna Lagoon and is a fishing port, where cotton, tobacco, timber and fruit are collected and distributed, and coastal trade with India and Myanmar is also carried out. There is a Dutch fort (1680), a church (1706) and Jaffna University. It is connected to Colombo by rail and road. Population 129,000 (1990 estimate). スリランカ北端部,ジャフナ半島南西部の港町。ジャフナ県の県都。前 204年タミル人が侵入,のちタミル王国の首都となり,1617年ポルトガル人が占領,58年オランダ領,1795年イギリス領となった。現在でも北部タミル人居住地域の商業,行政,文化の中心地。港はジャフナ潟湖にのぞむ良港で,漁業のほか綿花,タバコ,木材,果物などを集散,インドやミャンマーなどとの沿岸貿易も行われる。オランダ人建設の砦 (1680) や聖堂 (1706) ,ジャフナ大学がある。コロンボと鉄道,道路で結ばれる。人口 12万 9000 (1990推計) 。
