Shamash - Shamash (English spelling)

In ancient Mesopotamian mythology, he is the god of war and justice. In the Semitic Akkadian language written in cuneiform on clay tablets, his name means "sun, sun god." He is said to be the son of the moon god Sin, and was originally the war god of the Sumerians, the indigenous people of Mesopotamia (Utu in Sumerian, or Babbal, meaning "the shining one"). Later, he was brought under the Babylonian-Assyrian (Akkadian people) and was considered the god of justice, and was widely worshiped for several tens of centuries. His centers were Sippar and Larsa in central Mesopotamia, and his temple was called "E-Babbal" (the abode of the shining one) in Sumerian.
