Fox peony - Fox peony

A perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family (APG classification: Ranunculaceae). The stem is erect, 30-50 cm tall, and well branched at the top. The basal leaves are trifoliate once. The yellow flowers are about 1 cm in diameter and grow in sparse racemes from April to July. A large number of flattened achenes gather together to form a confetti-like aggregate fruit. A plant commonly found in wet and marshy areas throughout Japan, with many variations. A weed in rice paddies. The Yamakitsunenobotan variety has many hairs that run obliquely up the stem and grows in mountainous areas. A closely related species, Himekitsunenobotan R. yaegatakensis Masam., which is significantly smaller overall, is distributed on Yakushima Island. It is also distinguished from the closely related species Umanoashigata (buttercup) by its trifoliate leaves, small flowers, and flattened achenes.

キンポウゲ科（APG分類：キンポウゲ科）の多年草。茎は直立し高さ30～50センチメートル、上部でよく分枝する。根出葉は1回3出複葉。花は黄色、直径約1センチメートルで、4～7月、まばらな総状花序につく。扁平(へんぺい)な痩果(そうか)が多数集まって、金平糖(こんぺいとう)状の集合果となる。日本全土の水湿地に普通にみられ、変異の多い植物。水田の雑草。変種ヤマキツネノボタンは茎に斜上する毛が多く、山地に生える。屋久(やく)島には、全体が著しく小さい近縁の別種ヒメキツネノボタンR. yaegatakensis Masam.が分布する。また近縁の別種ウマノアシガタ（キンポウゲ）とは、葉が3出複葉で、花が小さく、痩果が扁平であることで区別される。
