Chemistry, the study of reactions, and physics, the study of physical properties, are closely interdisciplinary fields that share the common concept of molecules. The field that seeks the origin of the functions of matter in molecules and studies the structures and properties of molecules and molecular groups from an electronic theory perspective deserves to be called molecular science. Molecular science provides methodologies from both theoretical and experimental perspectives for molecular-level research conducted in fields such as astronomy, biology, and physiology, as well as chemistry and physics. Originally, the concept of molecules as complexes of atoms was born in the field of chemistry at the beginning of the 19th century, and modern chemistry has developed based on the molecular concept, with its refinement and expansion.

反応研究の学問としての化学と物性研究の学問としての物理学が分子概念を共通にして近接した学際領域。物質の機能の根源を分子に求め，分子や分子集団の構造や諸性質を電子論的立場で研究する分野は分子科学と呼ぶにふさわしい。分子科学は化学，物理学はいうまでもなく，さらに天文学，生物学，生理学などの諸分野において行われる分子レベルの研究に対して理論と実験の両面から方法論を提供するものである。　元来，原子の複合体としての分子という概念は19世紀の初めに化学の分野で生まれたものであり，近代化学は分子概念を基盤としてその改良拡張に伴って発展した。
