Venizelos

Greek politician. Born in Crete. Participated in the anti-Turkish War of Independence, and became Minister of Justice of the Cretan Autonomous Government in 1899. Invited to Greece in 1909 as a leader of the constitutional reform movement, he served as Prime Minister five times between 1910 and 1933, participated in World War I, and promoted Greater Hellenicism, including the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic. In 1935, he went into exile in Paris in opposition to the restoration of the monarchy.

ギリシアの政治家。クレタ島生れ。反トルコ独立戦争に参加，1899年クレタ自治政府法務大臣。1909年立憲改革派指導者としてギリシアに招かれ，1910年―1933年の間５度首相となり，第１次大戦に参戦，王制廃止と共和制確立など大ギリシア主義を推進。1935年王制復古に反対してパリに亡命。
