Ferredoxin

An electron transfer protein found widely in plants and bacteria. It contains equimolar amounts of iron and sulfur atoms (often two each) and has a molecular weight of 10,000 to 16,000. In plants, it is involved in electron transfer in the light reaction of photosynthesis. Its redox potential is low, with spinach ferredoxin having a molecular weight of -0.42 V. Ferredoxin from the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium pasteurianum has a molecular weight of 40,000 and is thought to be involved in nitrogen reduction in nitrogen fixation reactions. Ferredoxins have also been found in animal tissues such as the adrenal cortex, but the role of some of them is not fully understood.

植物および細菌に広く分布する電子伝達蛋白質。鉄と硫黄の原子を等モルずつ含んでいて (2個ずつのことが多い) ，分子量は1万～1.6万。植物では光合成明反応での電子伝達に関与する。酸化還元電位は低く，ホウレンソウのフェレドキシンでは－0.42V。嫌気性細菌クロストリディウム・パストゥリアヌムのフェレドキシンは分子量4万で，窒素固定反応における窒素還元に関係すると考えられている。また副腎皮質などの動物組織にもフェレドキシンは見出されているが，その役割については十分明らかでないものもある。
