Ferret (English spelling) Mustela putorius furo; ferret
Carnivora, Mustelidae. Males are 38cm long, females 34cm long, and tails 12-14cm long. They have a long, slender body, with short front and back legs. They are white or light in color. They secrete a foul-smelling secretion from their anal glands. They are domesticated European polecats Mustela putorius , which live in the Ural Mountains from Western Europe. They have been kept since Roman times to control rats. They were recently introduced to New Zealand to control rabbits, and have become feral. They have also been used as experimental animals since the 1920s for various virus infection experiments. Recently, individuals with their anal glands removed are sold as pets. They live for 5-6 years when kept indoors. They reach sexual maturity at 10 months of age, and go into heat in spring and autumn. They have an average gestation period of 45 days, and give birth to 5-8 pups. They can be kept on milk and pet food, but they have a high susceptibility to distemper and influenza, so contact with dogs and rhesus patients should be avoided.
