Transept (English spelling)

Japanese: トランセプト（英語表記）transept

A secondary nave in a Christian church, built in a north-south direction in front of the chancel, perpendicular to the main nave. It is also called a cross aisle or transept. It consists of a crossing (where it intersects with the main nave) and two side aisles on either side, but the transept alone is sometimes called a transept. Its ceiling height is the same as that of the main nave, but its length is generally shorter. When a transept protrudes from the outer wall of a side aisle, the church has a cruciform plan, but even if it does not protrude, if its ceiling is higher than that of the side aisle, it will create a cruciform space together with the main nave.

キリスト教聖堂の主たる身廊に直交して，内陣の前に造られる南北方向の副次的な身廊。交差廊，横断廊ともいう。交差部(主たる身廊と交差する部分)とその両側の袖廊で構成されるが，袖廊だけをトランセプトとよぶこともある。天井の高さは主たる身廊に準ずるが，長さは一般にそれより短い。トランセプトが側廊の外壁から突出するとき，聖堂は十字形平面となるが，突出しなくてもその天井が側廊より高ければ，主たる身廊とともに十字形の空間を造りあげる。
