An industrial city in Gauteng Province in the northeast of South Africa. Population 71,000 (1991), metropolitan population 774,000 (1991). Located on the Vaal River near gold mining areas. Manufactures steel, bricks, and tiles, and also processes lime and coal. Built in 1892, it grew along with the development of nearby coal mines. Peace talks to end the Boer War were held here in 1902 between the Boers and the British.
