Hiraoka Ginshu - Hiraoka Ginshu

Founder of the Tomei school of shamisen music. His real name was Hiraoka Hiroshi, and he also wrote the name Kojian Ginshu. In 1871 (Meiji 4), he traveled to the United States with Mori Arinori to learn the technology of manufacturing railroad locomotives. He returned to Japan in 1877, and in 1887 established the Hiraoka Factory for manufacturing railroad locomotives in Kinshibori, Honjo, Tokyo, as a pioneer of the railroad industry. He made a name for himself as a businessman, and squandered the huge profits he made on entertainment and hobbies, earning him the nickname of Hiraoka Daijin. He made an effort to revive the Kato-bushi style, and studied a wide range of traditional Japanese music. Around 1902 and 1903 (Meiji 35 and 36), he began composing new pieces based on his favorite tunes from Edo music, which he named Tomei-bushi and later called Tomei-ryu. His distinctive style is calm and elegant, and his school's name includes the characters Fune (singer) and Gin (singer). He also excels at writing and composing kouta (short songs), and has many excellent works. He was also the first to import baseball.

三味線音楽東明(とうめい)流の創始者。本名平岡凞(ひろし)、江児庵吟舟と号す。1871年（明治4）森有礼(ありのり)とともに渡米、鉄道機関車車両製造の技術を学び、77年帰国、87年車両製造の平岡工場を東京・本所錦糸堀(きんしぼり)に創設した鉄道工業の先駆者。実業家として名をはせ、巨利を得たその富を遊芸、趣味道楽に散じたので平岡大尽とよばれた。河東(かとう)節の復興に尽力し、広く邦楽各流を学び、1902、03年（明治35、36）ごろから江戸音曲中気に入った節調をもとにくふうを凝らして新曲をつくり、東明節と名づけ、のち東明流と称した。落ち着いた曲風と品のよいのが特色で、門流の名取名には唄方に舟、三味線方に吟の字を冠する。また小唄(こうた)の作詞、作曲にも長じ、多くの佳作がある。ベースボールの最初の輸入者でもあった。
