1865‐1937 Dutch poet and man of letters. Born in Amsterdam as the son of a furniture maker, he showed early talent for poetry and became acquainted with Kroes and others while in high school. In 1885, he participated in the founding of the so-called 1980s coterie magazine Neues Dostigens. In the same year, he published his first collection of poems, Persephone and Other Poems. He eventually opened up a unique philosophical realm of poetry based on Spinoza's pantheism. In 1905, he founded the magazine Movement and nurtured many successors, and in his later years he lectured on Dutch literature at Leiden University. His collections of poems include Heres der Welt (1896), The New Garden (1898), and The Sarcophagus Statues (1930), as well as many other works, including An Introduction to New Dutch Poetics (1905) and Vondel's Poems and Original Prose (1937).
