Albert Verwey

1865‐1937
Dutch poet and man of letters. Born in Amsterdam as the son of a furniture maker, he showed early talent for poetry and became acquainted with Kroes and others while in high school. In 1885, he participated in the founding of the so-called 1980s coterie magazine Neues Dostigens. In the same year, he published his first collection of poems, Persephone and Other Poems. He eventually opened up a unique philosophical realm of poetry based on Spinoza's pantheism. In 1905, he founded the magazine Movement and nurtured many successors, and in his later years he lectured on Dutch literature at Leiden University. His collections of poems include Heres der Welt (1896), The New Garden (1898), and The Sarcophagus Statues (1930), as well as many other works, including An Introduction to New Dutch Poetics (1905) and Vondel's Poems and Original Prose (1937).

オランダの詩人，文学者。家具職人の子としてアムステルダムに生まれ，早くから詩才を現し，高等学校在学中からクロースらと交わる。1885年，いわゆる80年代派の同人雑誌《新道標》の創刊に参加。同年，処女詩集《ペルセフォネその他の詩》を出す。やがてスピノザの汎神論にもとづくユニークな哲学的詩境をひらいた。1905年，雑誌《運動》を創刊して多くの後進を育成し，晩年，ライデン大学でオランダ文学を講じた。詩集に《現世》(1896)，《新しき園》(1898)，《石棺の彫像》(1930)ほか多数があり，また《新オランダ詩法入門》(1905)，《フォンデルの詩と独創的散文》(1937)などの著作がある。
