Akashi Man

This is the common name for the left hipbone of a human collected by Nobuo Naora in 1931 (Showa 6) from collapsed soil of a Pleistocene stratum on the Nishiyagi coast of Okubo-cho, Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture. The actual specimen was lost in war damage, but Hasebe Kotondo conducted research based on a plaster model, and in 1948 (Showa 23) provisionally named Nipponanthropus akashiensis , asserting that early human humans lived in Japan when it was connected to the continent. In the same year, excavations were carried out at the site, but no human bone fossils were encountered. The Nishiyagi Formation, where the human bones are believed to have been buried, is currently thought to be 120,000 to 30,000 years ago, or 50,000 to 60,000 years ago, so they are not the bones of early humans. The stone tools collected by Naora from the same layer are not considered to be man-made today. In 1982, Banri Endo (1934-2017) and Hisao Baba (1945- ) compared the hip bones of ape-men to modern humans from around the world and announced their belief that the bones were from the Jomon period or later. In 1985, Hideji Harunari (1942- ) re-excavated the site, but was unable to reach a definitive conclusion.

兵庫県明石市大久保町西八木(にしやぎ)海岸の更新世の地層の崩壊土中から、1931年（昭和6）、直良信夫(なおらのぶお)が採集した人類の左側寛骨(かんこつ)の通称。現物は戦災により失われたが、石膏(せっこう)模型に基づいて長谷部言人(はせべことんど)が研究を行い、1948年（昭和23）、ニッポナントロプス・アカシエンシスNipponanthropus akashiensisと仮称、原人段階の人類が大陸と地続きであったころの日本に住んでいたことを主張した。同年、現地の発掘を行ったが、人骨化石には遭遇しなかった。人骨が埋没していたとされる西八木層の年代は現在では12、3万年前または5、6万年前と考えられているので、原人の骨ではない。同層から直良が採集した石器は、現在では人工品とみなされていない。1982年、遠藤萬里(えんどうばんり)（1934―2017）、馬場悠男(ばばひさお)（1945―　）は、世界各地の猿人～現代人の腰骨との比較を行い、縄文時代以降の人骨との考えを発表した。1985年、春成秀爾(はるなりひでじ)（1942―　）が現地の再発掘を行ったが、最終的な結論を得るには至らなかった。
