A general term for Old World monkeys in the genus Macaca , family Cercopithecidae, order Primates. It includes 12 species in 7 subgenera, such as the Japanese macaque, the rhesus macaque, and the crab-eating macaque. Most are native to Asia, and are widely distributed in the Japanese archipelago, southern China, Pakistan, India, Southeast Asia, and neighboring islands. The only exception is the Barbary ape, which lives in Gibraltar and North Africa. Many species have stocky bodies, and there is a considerable difference in size between males and females, but they generally fall within the range of 6-13 kg in weight and 40-70 cm in head-to-body length.
