…French painter. Considered the father of modern French painting. Born in Les Andelys in Normandy. His father was of local nobility and participated in the campaigns of Henry IV. In 1612, he met the painter Q. Varin, who visited the town. He studied from 1612 to 1621, frequenting the studio of N. Jouvenet, but is said to have moved to Paris quite early (probably around 1612) and studied under L.G. Allemand (Lallemant) and others. …
