...The custom of not wearing rings on the middle finger remained in the 16th century, as did the custom of wearing rings on the thumb or the knuckles. The "thumb ring" was a custom in the 14th to 17th centuries. As the technology for polishing gemstones improved from around the 17th century, colored gemstones began to be used for rings, and in the 18th century, polished diamonds came to dominate the gemstone world, and began to be used for rings as well.
